About this opportunity
The Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration seeks applications to establish a university-led consortium that enhances nuclear research capabilities at U.S. universities, with particular emphasis on nuclear cyber-physical protection, digital technologies in advanced nuclear reactors, and small modular reactor development and safety assessments. Eligible applicants are limited to U.S. universities and colleges as prime applicants, with subrecipients including nonprofit and for-profit organizations, state and local government entities, Indian Tribes, and Federally Funded Research and Development Centers. A minimum of 50% of the budget must be dedicated to equipment and infrastructure upgrades, non-university collaborators are capped at 20% of total government funding, and all work must be performed in the United States. Technical review will evaluate proposals based on Merit of the Project Relative to Revitalizing Nuclear Research Infrastructure (35%), Appropriateness of the Proposed Method or Approach (35%), and Applicant Team Capabilities, Risks, and Experience (30%). The application deadline is May 13, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time, with anticipated selection notification on September 30, 2026, and award date of February 1, 2027.
