About this opportunity

The Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Nuclear Energy is seeking applications from U.S. universities and colleges for the Fiscal Year 2025 Scientific Infrastructure Support for Consolidated Innovative Nuclear Research grant opportunity. The funding will support two main areas: University Research Reactor Upgrades Infrastructure Support, and General Scientific Infrastructure Support for Universities. Eligible applicants can apply for up to $5 million per award in either funding area to upgrade nuclear research and training reactors, obtain equipment to improve research and education capabilities, and strengthen academic nuclear engineering infrastructure aligned with the DOE's nuclear energy mission. Proposals are due by July 17, 2024, and the DOE anticipates making multiple smaller awards averaging around $250,000 each with a 1-year project performance period starting August 1, 2025. Cost sharing is not required but is encouraged, with a 1:1 match required for General Scientific Infrastructure requests over $250,000.

This funding opportunity is part of the DOE's broader Nuclear Energy Research, Development and Demonstration program (CFDA 81.121), which provides grants, cooperative agreements, and facility access for a range of nuclear energy science and technology initiatives across the research, development, and demonstration lifecycle. The goal is to advance nuclear energy capabilities to help meet the nation's energy, environmental, and economic needs.

this administrative amendment contains the following: • Updated table of contents • Updated language and added clarification under Part IV Application and Submission - D.5 Project Team Curriculum Vitae (CV) to include the following: o Re-stated 3-page limit. o Publications limited to the 10 most closely related to the proposed project. - The Office of Nuclear Energy's (NE) mission is to advance nuclear energy science and technology to meet U.S. energy, environmental, and economic needs. NE has identified the following goals to address challenges in the nuclear energy sector, help realize the potential of advanced technology, and leverage the unique role of the government in spurring innovation: • Keep existing U.S. nuclear reactors operating. • Deploy new nuclear reactors. • Secure and sustain our nuclear fuel cycle. • Expand international nuclear energy cooperation. Collectively, all NE-sponsored activities support the Department's priorities to combat the climate crisis, create clean energy jobs with the free and fair chance to join a union and bargain collectively, and promote equity and environmental justice by delivering innovative clean energy technologies for nuclear energy systems. The development of nuclear energy-related infrastructure and basic capabilities in the research community is necessary to promote Research and Development (R & D) that supports nuclear science and engineering (NS & E), NE's mission, and the nation's nuclear energy challenges. Accordingly, the Department of Energy (DOE) intends to facilitate the education and training of nuclear scientists, engineers, and policymakers through graduate and undergraduate study, two-year programs, and R & D that is relevant to the Department and the U.S. nuclear energy industry in general.
