About this opportunity
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is soliciting grant applications for projects that protect, restore, enhance, and acquire real property interests in coastal wetland ecosystems. Eligible applicants are designated state and territorial agencies in jurisdictions bordering the Great Lakes and Atlantic, Gulf (excluding Louisiana), and Pacific coasts, encompassing 33 eligible states and territories. Projects must ensure conservation benefits endure for at least 20 years and may include land acquisition, habitat restoration, enhancement, or management activities that provide benefits to coastal communities, fish and wildlife habitats, and the recreating public. Applications will be evaluated using 13 merit review criteria addressing wetlands conservation outcomes, habitat benefits, long-term viability, species protection, cost-effectiveness, and partnership support. The application deadline is July 9, 2026 at 11:59 PM ET, with anticipated project performance periods from January 8, 2027 through January 11, 2030.
The program offers total funding of $18,000,000 with approximately 35 awards expected, with individual grant amounts ranging from $50,000 to $1,000,000 per project. Cost-sharing is required with federal participation rates of 75 percent for states with established acquisition funds and 50 percent for those without such funds; however, American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands are exempt from cost-sharing requirements. Projects will be performed in coastal areas within eligible state and territorial jurisdictions, with applications submitted through Grants.gov or GrantSolutions by the stated deadline.
Synopsis
The National Coastal Wetlands Conservation Grant Program supports the long‐term conservation of coastal wetland ecosystems for the benefit of coastal communities, fish and wildlife and their habitats, and the recreating public. The Program provides designated State and Territory agencies with cost sharing awards for projects that protect and restore valuable coastal wetland resources. Projects may include the acquisition of real property interests in a coastal wetland ecosystem and the restoration, enhancement, or management of coastal wetlands.Coastal wetlands are valued because they protect against flooding, help maintain water quality, and provide habitats for fish and wildlife. Coastal environments are also important economically, generating billions of dollars annually through recreational and commercial fishing, boating, and tourism. The Program is co-administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Coastal Program and the Office of Conservation Investment.
