About this opportunity

The Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service is soliciting applications from federally recognized tribal governments for the Tribal Wildlife Grants program, with applications due August 14, 2026. No cost share is required. The program will distribute approximately $6.2 million across an expected 80 awards, with individual grants ranging from $25,000 to $200,000. Eligible applicants are federally recognized Native American tribal governments listed in the Federal Register Notice of Indian Entities Recognized and Eligible to Receive Services from the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Projects run for three years, with an anticipated start date of November 21, 2026 and end date of November 20, 2029. Eligible activities include planning for wildlife and habitat conservation; conservation and management actions such as field surveys, population monitoring, fish passage construction, habitat restoration, and invasive species management; field and laboratory research; habitat mapping; and conservation education. Funding supports salaries, equipment, consultant services, subawards, materials, and travel costs. Species targeted are not restricted to those hunted, fished, or listed as threatened or endangered, and may include plants and animals of Native American cultural or traditional importance.

Merit review allocates 30 points to Resource Benefit, 20 points to Capacity Building, 18 points to Performance Measures, 12 points to Outreach/Partnership/Data Sharing, 10 points to Work Plan, and 10 points to Budget. Regional-level review designates the top two applications at each region as First Tier and automatically recommends them for funding; remaining applications proceed through Second and Third Tier national review. Tribes with past-due reporting on active TWG awards have 30 days to cure deficiencies before becoming eligible for new funds. The CFDA number is 15.639.
