About this opportunity

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is soliciting grant proposals for wetland conservation projects in Mexico that protect, restore, and manage wetland ecosystems and associated habitats to benefit migratory birds and fish wildlife. Eligible applicants include state and local governments, nonprofits with 501(c)(3) status, tribal governments and organizations, higher education institutions, small businesses, and individuals, all of which must demonstrate public-private partnerships and secure a 1:1 non-federal cash match equal to their grant request. Proposals must be submitted through GrantSolutions.gov by May 28, 2026 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time and must include the SF-424 Application for Federal Assistance, budget forms, project narratives, match contribution letters, GIS shapefiles, and project photographs. The Fish and Wildlife Service Division of Bird Habitat Conservation will screen applications, followed by review and ranking by the North American Wetlands Conservation Council and relevant Joint Venture Coordinators, with final funding approval by the Migratory Bird Conservation Commission. Evaluation will consider alignment with North American Waterfowl Management Plan objectives, U.S. Shorebird Conservation Plan, and other international bird conservation agreements, as well as the quality of partnerships and long-term conservation sustainability.

Approximately 15 awards ranging from a minimum of $10,000 to a maximum of $1,000,000 per project will be distributed from the total program funding of $2,500,000. Projects must be two-year plans of action with an anticipated performance period of May 1, 2027 through May 1, 2029, with awards announced in early May 2027. All work must be conducted in Mexico, with eligible activities including property acquisition, wetland restoration and enhancement, technical training, environmental education, and organizational infrastructure-building specifically designed to strengthen wetland conservation capacity in Mexico.
