About this opportunity

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is seeking innovative research proposals for its Expeditionary Carbon Utilization for energy Resilience and Stabilization (ExCURSion) program. DARPA aims to develop foundational technologies to enable carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction, capture, and storage, with the goal of creating a self-contained system that generates liquid carbon fuels from combustion products. This system would provide portable, rechargeable energy storage for expeditionary forces, independent of a fuel supply line. Proposals will be evaluated based on scientific and technical merit, contribution to DARPA's mission, and cost and schedule realism. The deadline for submitting proposals is April 29, 2024.

DARPA anticipates making multiple awards under this solicitation, potentially in the form of cooperative agreements or procurement contracts. The program has a base period of 24 months, with an optional 9-month extension. Funding will be provided through the Research and Technology Development program (CFDA 12.910), which supports basic, applied, and advanced research at educational institutions, nonprofit organizations, and commercial firms with potential military or dual-use applications.

Synopsis

The Defense Sciences Office (DSO) at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is soliciting innovative research proposals in the foundational technologies area to enable carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction, capture, and storage. These technologies are envisioned as key components for a future self-enclosed system that creates liquid carbon fuels and uses them to store and deploy energy to address the need for energy resilience in an expeditionary setting, independent of a fuel supply line. The envisioned system will enable safe, field-deployable, high-density, and rechargeable energy storage. Proposed research should investigate innovative approaches enabling revolutionary advances in science, devices, or systems. Specifically excluded is research primarily resulting in evolutionary improvements to the existing state of practice.
