About this opportunity

The Department of the Army Medical Command is soliciting applications for the Traumatic Brain Injury and Psychological Health Translational Research Award, with a full application due date of October 15, 2026. The program prohibits basic research and clinical trials; preliminary data are required.

Applicant Types are unrestricted. Independent investigators of any citizenship may serve as Principal Investigator, but individuals in mentored positions are ineligible. The same investigator cannot be named PI on more than four TRA applications.

The Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs expects to allot approximately $9.0 million total, funding three Research Level 1 applications capped at $1.0 million each and three Research Level 2 applications capped at $2.0 million each. Research Level 1 supports refinement of mature ideas into tangible and knowledge products positioned for further evaluation. Research Level 2 supports rigorous evaluation of tangible and knowledge products in preparation for first-in-human studies or clinical trials. Applicants select the appropriate Research Level based on research scope. Performance period is four years maximum. An Early-Career Investigator Partnering Option accommodates two Principal Investigators (one Early-Career), with each receiving a separate award if recommended for funding.

The TRA prioritizes innovative approaches over iterative or incremental research. For animal research, applications must justify model selection and relevance to human clinical conditions. For prospective human subject enrollment, community-based participatory research approaches are required; studies enrolling 50 or more subjects must share data through FITBIR or NDA repositories. Research must address one of three focus areas: Understand (epidemiology and etiology of psychological health and TBI), Prevent and Assess (prevention, screening, diagnosis), or Treat (novel interventions).

Applications must adhere to rigorous study design standards (STROBE, CONSORT, SPIRIT, ARRIVE 2.0 guidelines) and address sex as a biological variable. Classified research is prohibited. Pre-applications are due July 13, 2026. Awards are made under CFDA 12.420 (Military Medical Research and Development) and are expected by September 30, 2027 using FY26 funds expiring September 30, 2032.

Synopsis

Summary: The Translational Research Award (TRA) intends to accelerate the conversion of scientific findings into impactful clinical applications. The TRA prioritizes innovative approaches over purely iterative or incremental research. Submissions focusing on minor modifications to existing standards without the intent or potential to significantly improve clinical care or patient outcomes do not meet the intent of the mechanism.

Distinctive Features: Basic research and clinical trials are prohibited. Preliminary data are required.

· For animal research, applications must describe the choice of model and its relevance to the human clinical condition.

· For research prospectively enrolling human subjects, the inclusion of community-based participatory research (CBPR) approaches is required.

· The Translational Research Award offers funding for two Research Levels. The applicant is responsible for selecting the Research Level based on the scope of the research.

○ Research Level 1: Supports the refinement of mature ideas and concepts into tangible and knowledge products positioned for further evaluation.

○ Research Level 2: Supports the rigorous evaluation of tangible and knowledge products in preparation for first-in-human studies or clinical trials.

· Early-Career Investigator Partnering Option (available for both Research Levels): This option accommodates two Principal Investigators (PIs), one of which is an Early-Career Investigator. If recommended for funding, each PI will receive a separate award.
