About this opportunity
The Department of the Army Medical Command is soliciting applications for the Fiscal Year 2026 Traumatic Brain Injury and Psychological Health Research Program Health Services Research Award, with a full application due October 15, 2026 and a pre-application due September 24, 2026.
Eligible applicants are unrestricted: extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, foreign and domestic organizations, and for-profit and nonprofit entities. The program expects to allot approximately $8.0 million to fund roughly two applications, each capped at $4.0 million total cost. The period of performance is a maximum of 4 years.
Applications must address health services research including comparative effectiveness research, implementation of interventions and clinical practices, and validation of data science insights. Clinical research or clinical trials are mandatory; prospective or retrospective studies involving human subjects, human subject data or records, and human anatomical substances are allowed. Preliminary data are required. Basic, preclinical, and animal research are prohibited. For research prospectively enrolling human subjects, community-based participatory research approaches are required.
The program offers an Early-Career Investigator Partnering Option accommodating two Principal Investigators, one early-career, each receiving a separate award if recommended for funding.
Applications must address at least one sub-area within two focus areas: "Prevent and Assess" (prevention, screening, diagnosis, or prognosis of psychological health conditions and/or traumatic brain injury) or "Treat" (novel and repurposed interventions to improve outcomes). All funded clinical research with at least 50 subjects must be shared through FITBIR or NDA repositories. Funded clinical trials must register and submit results on ClinicalTrials.gov. In-progress review meetings are required during Years 2–4, and annual technical progress reports with enrollment data by sex, race, and ethnicity are mandatory.
The Assistance Listing is 12.420 (Military Medical Research and Development).
Synopsis
Summary: The fiscal year 2026 (FY26) Traumatic Brain Injury and Psychological Health Research Program (TBIPHRP) Health Services Research Award (HSRA) intends to fund high-impact research that bridges the gap between research, practice and policy by building real-world evidence on how interventions, clinical practices/guidelines, or policies can be deployed to targeted populations at the appropriate time. In order to meet this intent, the mechanism supports health services research approaches.
Distinctive Features:
· The HSRA will support health services research approaches that include comparative effectiveness research; implementation of interventions, diagnostics and clinical practices/guidelines; and validation of data science insights.
· Applications must include clinical research or clinical trials. Prospective or retrospective clinical research or clinical trials involving human subjects, human subject data/records, and human anatomical substances are allowed.
· Preliminary data are required.
· Basic, preclinical and animal research are prohibited.
· For research prospectively enrolling human subjects, inclusion of community-based participatory research (CBPR) approaches is required.
· Early-Career Investigator Partnering Option: This option accommodates two Principal Investigators (PIs), one of which is an Early-Career Investigator. If recommended for funding, each PI will receive a separate award.
