About this opportunity
The Department of the Army Medical Command is soliciting applications for clinical trials addressing traumatic brain injury and psychological health conditions, with a full application due October 15, 2026. Applicants must select from two research levels and design trials to evaluate interventions including drugs, biologics, medical devices, diagnostics, therapies, or behavioral health strategies; preliminary data and community-based participatory research approaches are required.
Eligible applicants are unrestricted and include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of Defense organizations, as well as foreign and domestic entities. Principal Investigators must be independent investigators, not in mentored positions. An Early-Career Investigator Partnering Option is available for both research levels, accommodating two PIs (one early-career) who will each receive separate awards if recommended for funding.
Research Level 1 supports proof-of-principle pilot studies and phase 1 or phase 2 clinical trials with a maximum total cost of $2.1 million. Research Level 2 supports larger-scale and advanced trials evaluating effectiveness in relevant patient populations, with a maximum total cost of $4.1 million. The Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program expects to allot approximately $18.6 million to fund approximately three Research Level 1 awards and three Research Level 2 awards. The maximum period of performance is four years, and clinical trial start dates must occur no later than 12 months after award (18 months for regulatory agency studies). Awards will be made no later than September 30, 2027, using FY26 funds expiring September 30, 2032.
Applications must address one of two focus areas: "Prevent and Assess" (prevention, screening, diagnosis, or prognosis) or "Treat" (novel and repurposed interventions). Pre-application submission via eBRAP is due July 13, 2026. Full applications include a 20-page project narrative, regulatory strategy, post-award transition plan, study population recruitment and safety plan, and community-based participatory research documentation. Funded trials must register on ClinicalTrials.gov, post informed consent forms on federally available websites, and share data through FITBIR or NDA repositories for studies enrolling 50 or more subjects. The Assistance Listing is 12.420 (Military Medical Research and Development).
