About this opportunity

The Department of the Army Medical Command is soliciting applications for the Investigator-Initiated Research Award under the Toxic Exposures Research Program (TERP) to support studies addressing diseases and conditions associated with military-related toxic exposures, with a pre-application deadline of August 19, 2026 and full application due November 19, 2026.

Eligible applicants include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, foreign and domestic entities, for-profit and nonprofit organizations, and public or private entities. Independent investigators at all career levels may serve as Principal Investigator; individuals in mentored positions (postdoctoral fellows, clinical fellows) are ineligible. Cost sharing is not required.

The program expects to allot approximately $2.4 million to fund roughly three awards, with a total cost cap of $800,000 per award over a maximum three-year performance period. Awards are anticipated by September 30, 2027, utilizing FY26 funds expiring September 30, 2032.

Research must address at least one of four program goals (Predict and Prevent, Diagnose, Treat) and at least one of four topic areas (Neurotoxin Exposure, Gulf War Illness and Its Treatment, Airborne Hazards and Burn Pits, Other Military Service-Related Toxic Exposures). Research projects may focus on any phase from basic laboratory research through translational research, including preclinical studies in animal models and human subjects research, as well as correlative studies associated with existing clinical trials. New Approach Methodologies are permissible. Clinical trials are prohibited.

Applications are evaluated through two-tier review: peer review assessing technical merit, and programmatic review assessing alignment with program priorities. Required components include a 13-page project narrative, statement of work, technical and lay abstracts, and supporting documentation addressing research strategy, feasibility, impact, military relevance, personnel qualifications, and data sharing plans. Direct costs may support multi-institutional collaboration travel and one investigator's annual attendance at a scientific meeting.

The program operates under CFDA 12.420 (Military Medical Research and Development).
