About this opportunity
The Department of the Army Medical Command is seeking applicants for the Rare Cancers Research Program Resource and Community Development Award, with a full application deadline of November 18, 2026, and a pre-application deadline of August 19, 2026. The program is unrestricted by applicant type and supports extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, as well as foreign and domestic for-profit and nonprofit entities. Independent investigators at all career levels may serve as Principal Investigator regardless of citizenship status, though an investigator may be named as PI on only one FY26 application.
The program expects to allot approximately $5.60 million to fund roughly five applications with a total cost cap of $1.12 million per award over a maximum 4-year period of performance. Awards will be made no later than September 30, 2027, and funds expire September 30, 2032.
Applicants must develop clinical or preclinical datasets and research resources addressing gaps in rare cancers research, defined as cancers affecting six or fewer persons per 100,000 per year. Priority gaps include lack of research resources, communication and dissemination strategies, data sharing infrastructure, and therapeutics research. Applications must address either Platform Development or Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning focus areas and include at least two Patient Advocates as integral project partners throughout the study lifecycle. Documentation of engagement and partnership plans with Patient Advocates and a description of dissemination and sustainability of the platform for scientific and clinical and patient communities are required. Clinical trials are not permitted. Research must be relevant to active-duty Service Members, Veterans, military beneficiaries, and the American public. Preliminary data are not required but may be included to address feasibility.
The application process is two-tiered, requiring submission of a pre-application through eBRAP followed by full application submission through Grants.gov (extramural) or eBRAP (intramural DOW organizations). Peer review is scheduled for February 2027, and programmatic review for March/April 2027.
CFDA: 12.420 (Military Medical Research and Development).
Synopsis
Summary: The fiscal year 2026 (FY26) Rare Cancers Research Program (RCRP) Resource and Community Development Award (RCDA) supports the development of research resources and clinical or preclinical datasets that will advance the field of rare cancers research and ultimately improve outcomes for individuals with rare cancers. Research supporting this funding opportunity should fill one of the following major gaps:
- Lack of research and clinical resources, including patient tissues, cell and tumor models.
- Lack of communication and dissemination strategies within scientific and patient communities for sharing rare cancers research and clinical findings.
- Lack of infrastructure for sharing data and other resources.
- Lack of therapeutics and mechanistic research to inform treatment development.
Distinctive Features:
- Documentation of plans for engagement and partnerships with Patient Advocates throughout the life cycle of the research study from development of the research question through execution of the study.
- Community building and enhancement are key components.
- A description of the dissemination and sustainability of the platform for scientific and/or clinical and patient community is required.
- Preliminary data are not required but may be included to address feasibility.
