About this opportunity
The Department of the Army Medical Command is soliciting applications for the Fiscal Year 2026 Rare Cancers Research Program Concept Award supporting highly innovative, untested, potentially groundbreaking novel concepts in rare cancers, with a letter of intent due September 16, 2026 and full application due September 30, 2026. Applicants must demonstrate how the proposed concept will represent an innovative, novel course of investigation in rare cancers affecting six or fewer persons per 100,000 per year in the United States.
Eligible applicants include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, for-profit and nonprofit entities, and foreign and domestic organizations. Independent investigators at or above the postdoctoral fellow level may serve as Principal Investigator, with each investigator permitted on only one FY26 RCRP Concept Award application. The award ceiling is $140,000 total cost per concept award with a maximum performance period of two years. The program expects to fund approximately eighteen concept awards from the $2.52 million allocation. FY26 funds must be obligated by September 30, 2032.
Preliminary data are not required. Research must address one or more focus areas: Biology, Preclinical Research Models, Therapy, or Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning Models. Clinical trials, painful research on domestic cats or dogs (except military or service animals), and studies not qualifying for exempt or expedited IRB status are prohibited.
Applications undergo blinded peer and programmatic review. Due to the blinded review process, identifying or referencing the Principal Investigator, collaborators, or their organizations in the Project Narrative, Supporting Documentation, Impact Statement, Justification Statement, or Statement of Work will result in administrative rejection. Reviewers assess applications on Innovation, Research Strategy and Feasibility, Impact, and Application Presentation. Peer review is scheduled for December 2026, programmatic review for March–April 2027, and awards are anticipated by September 30, 2027.
The opportunity falls under Assistance Listing 12.420 (Military Medical Research and Development).
