About this opportunity
The Department of the Army Medical Command, through the Defense Health Agency, is soliciting applications for the FY26 Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program (PRMRP) Research Advancement Award to support fundamental, use-inspired basic research addressing congressionally directed topic areas across eight portfolios including Autoimmune Disorders, Cardiovascular Health, Infectious Diseases, Neuroscience and Mental Health, Orthopaedic Medicine, Rare Diseases, and Respiratory and Environmental Health. Applicants must be independent investigators at the assistant professor level or equivalent from eligible extramural or intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, and all applications must include preliminary data demonstrating relevance to military health while addressing one specified topic area and one strategic goal aligned with the continuum of care. Applications will undergo a two-tier competitive review process, with peer review assessing technical merit in September/October 2026 and programmatic review in December 2026/January 2027, evaluating submissions based on technical merit, military relevance, and alignment with funding opportunity intent. The pre-application deadline is July 16, 2026, with full applications due July 30, 2026, submitted through either eBRAP or Grants.gov depending on applicant type.
The Department of the Army expects to allot approximately $19.6 million to fund roughly 14 Research Advancement Award applications, with individual award caps of $1.4 million and a maximum performance period of 4 years. Awards are anticipated to be made no later than September 30, 2027, utilizing FY26 funds that expire September 30, 2032. Research will be conducted at eligible extramural and intramural organizations domestically and internationally, with clinical trials prohibited but noninterventional clinical research permitted.
