About this opportunity

The Department of the Army Medical Command, through the Defense Health Agency, is soliciting applied research proposals that translate fundamental scientific understanding into clinical solutions with near-term patient impact through the FY26 Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program (PRMRP) Impact Award. Eligible applicants include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, as well as foreign and domestic for-profit and nonprofit entities, with Principal Investigators at the Assistant Professor level or equivalent; partnering PI applications require at least one clinician investigator (M.D., D.O., or equivalent). Proposals must address one of nine congressionally directed topic areas (Autoimmune Disorders, Cardiovascular Health, Infectious Diseases, Internal Medicine, Neuroscience and Mental Health, Orthopaedic Medicine, Rare Diseases, Research and Clinical Tools, and Respiratory Health) and align with portfolio-specific strategic goals emphasizing the continuum of care. Applications undergo a two-step process with pre-application submission via eBRAP due July 23, 2026 (5:00 p.m. ET) and full application submission due August 6, 2026 (11:59 p.m. ET), with peer review evaluating impact, research strategy and feasibility, translation and post-award transition planning, personnel qualifications, and partnership quality. Clinical trials are prohibited; however, noninterventional clinical research is permitted, and applications must include mature preliminary data demonstrating translational readiness and detailed statements addressing military health relevance and implementation plans.

The CDMRP expects to allocate approximately $32.0 million to fund roughly 10 Impact Award applications, with total cost caps of $2.8 million for single PI applications or $3.6 million for partnering PI applications, and a maximum performance period of four years. FY26 funds will expire for use on September 30, 2032, with funding awards obligated no later than September 30, 2027. Research may be conducted at eligible extramural and intramural organizations domestically and internationally, with emphasis on institutions capable of translating research outcomes toward clinical applicability and military health priorities.

Synopsis

Summary: The fiscal year 2026 (FY26) Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program (PRMRP) Impact Award supports applied research, defined as use-inspired and practice-oriented science that brings together outcomes from basic research, and insights from the real-world environment, to foster clinical applicability. The Impact Award intends to translate the fundamental understanding of underlying mechanisms toward solutions that have the potential for major near-term impact for patients and clear alignment to one of the congressionally directed FY26 PRMRP topic areas and one of the FY26 PRMRP portfolio-specific strategic goals.

Distinctive Features: This funding mechanism allows for multiple Principal Investigators (PIs). Only the initiating PI's organization will submit a pre-application, but all PIs' organizations will need to submit full applications. The partnering PI's application is an abbreviated package specific to their distinct portion of the research project. Be advised, all associated applications for a research project may be withdrawn if the initiating or partnering application is rejected or administratively withdrawn.

Funding Details: The Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) expects to allot roughly $32.0M to fund approximately 10 Impact Award applications with total cost caps of $2.8M for the Single PI Option, or $3.6M for the Partnering PI Option. The maximum period of performance is 4 years. It is anticipated that awards made from this FY26 funding opportunity will be funded with FY26 funds, which will expire for use on September 30, 2032. Awards supported with FY26 funds will be made no later than September 30, 2027.
