About this opportunity
The Department of the Army Medical Command is soliciting applications for the Fiscal Year 2026 Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program Impact Award, with a full application deadline of October 5, 2026 and a pre-application deadline of June 26, 2026.
Eligible applicants include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of Defense organizations, foreign and domestic organizations, and for-profit and nonprofit entities; independent investigators at all career levels are eligible as principal investigators. Applications must address one of 20 congressionally directed FY26 PRCRP Topic Areas (including blood cancers, gastrointestinal cancers, neurological cancers, pediatric/adolescent/young adult cancers, solid tumors, and metastatic cancers) and cannot include melanoma or cancers originating in the breast, kidney, lung, pancreas, prostate, or ovary. Research must demonstrate relevance to military health by addressing environmental exposure risk factors associated with military activities or filling gaps in mission readiness related to cancer prevention, detection, diagnosis, treatment, quality of life, or survivorship.
The CDMRP expects to allot approximately $45.0 million to fund roughly 30 single-PI Impact Award applications with total cost caps of $1.5 million per award, and $28.0 million to fund approximately 14 Impact Award-Partnering PI Option applications with total cost caps of $2.0 million. The maximum period of performance is three years, with awards anticipated by September 30, 2027.
The funding mechanism supports mature research with strong potential for near-term clinical impact. Applications must include preliminary data demonstrating feasibility and may include clinical trials. The program permits single or two partnering PIs (Initiating PI and Partnering PI); both must submit full applications, but only the Initiating PI submits a pre-application. Peer review is scheduled for December 2026 and programmatic review for February 2027. The Assistance Listing number is 12.420 (Military Medical Research and Development).
Synopsis
Summary: The fiscal year 2026 (FY26) Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program (PRCRP) Impact Award supports mature research that will have a near-term impact on clinical cancer care in one of the congressionally directed FY26 PRCRP Topic Areas. Applicants must consider how the research project will lead to the advancement of knowledge in cancer research, patient care and/or treatment options in the Military Health System (MHS).
Distinctive Features:
• Applications must include preliminary data to support feasibility of the study.
• Projects must have strong potential to result in a near-term impact in cancer.
• The funding mechanism allows clinical trials.
• This funding mechanism allows for a single Principal Investigator (PI), or two partnering PIs referred to as the Initiating PI and the Partnering PI. Only the Initiating PI will submit a pre-application, but both PIs will need to submit full applications. The Partnering PI's application is an abbreviated package specific to their distinct portion of the research project. Be advised, both applications for a research project may be withdrawn if the initiating or partnering application is rejected or administratively withdrawn.
