About this opportunity
The Defense Health Agency's Medical Command is soliciting applications for the Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program Idea Award, supporting innovative, high-risk/high-reward cancer research with an October 5, 2026 application deadline; the program expects to fund approximately 30 standard awards and 15 Early Career Investigator Option awards, each capped at $600,000 total cost over a maximum 2-year period.
Applicants are unrestricted by organizational type; eligible entities include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of Defense organizations, foreign and domestic organizations, for-profit and nonprofit entities, and public or private organizations. Principal Investigators must be independent investigators. The Early Career Investigator option is limited to investigators below Associate Professor level, within seven years of completing postdoctoral or clinical training, and receiving less than $150,000 in annual extramural non-mentored research funding.
The program expects to allot approximately $18.0 million for standard Idea Awards and $9.0 million for Early Career Investigator Option awards. Applications must address at least one congressionally designated FY26 PRCRP Topic Area, including blood cancers, brain cancer, colorectal cancer, and endometrial cancer, and cannot address melanoma or cancers originating in breast, kidney, lung, pancreas, prostate, or ovary. Research must demonstrate direct military health relevance by addressing environmental exposure risk factors or mission readiness gaps.
The application process is two-tiered: a one-page preproposal narrative submitted through eBRAP by June 26, 2026, followed by invitational full applications due October 5, 2026. Full applications include a six-page project narrative, technical and lay abstracts, statement of work, military health relevance and innovation statements, and supporting documentation. Peer review is scheduled for December 2026; programmatic review for February 2027; awards are anticipated by September 30, 2027 using FY26 funds expiring September 30, 2032. The proposed project must demonstrate creative thinking and innovation; incremental advances, the next logical step, or switching model systems between cancer types are not appropriate. Preliminary data is not required, provided the project is based on strong scientific rationale.
CFDA 12.420 (Military Medical Research and Development).

• Inclusion of preliminary data is not required; however, the project must be based on strong scientific rationale.
• New for FY26: Early Career Investigator Option: The Early Career Investigator option is designed to support the continued development of promising independent investigators that are early in their faculty appointments.
