About this opportunity

The Department of the Army Medical Command is soliciting applications for the Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program Clinical Trial Award to fund the rapid implementation of clinical trials with significant potential impact on cancer treatment or management, with full applications due October 5, 2026. Applicants must include a mandatory clinical trial requirement with no animal studies permitted; all preclinical work must be completed before the award start date. If an Investigational New Drug application, Investigational Device Exemption, or equivalent is required, the regulatory application must be submitted to the relevant regulatory agency by the application deadline.

Applicants are unrestricted by entity type; eligible applicants include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of Defense organizations, for-profit and nonprofit organizations, and public or private entities. Principal investigators at all career levels may apply regardless of citizenship. No cost share is required.

The program expects to distribute approximately $45 million across approximately 10 awards, with a total cost cap of $4.5 million per award and a maximum period of performance of 4 years. Clinical trials may range from phase 0 to phase III and must address at least one of 21 congressionally designated cancer topic areas while aligning with one of five PRCRP portfolio strategic goals and demonstrating relevance to military health through environmental exposure risk factors or mission readiness gaps. All applications must integrate two or more patient advocates throughout the project and include detailed study population recruitment and safety plans with specified enrollment distribution by sex, race, and ethnicity. Applications undergo two-tier review: peer review for technical merit, and programmatic review considering clinical impact, research strategy, regulatory strategy, recruitment feasibility, statistical rigor, ethical considerations, and personnel qualifications. Pre-applications are due June 26, 2026, with invitations to submit full applications expected by August 10, 2026. The funding falls under CFDA 12.420, Military Medical Research and Development.

Synopsis

Summary: The fiscal year 2026 (FY26) Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program (PRCRP) Clinical Trial Award (CTA) supports the rapid implementation of clinical trials with the potential to have a significant impact on the treatment or management of cancer within at least one of the FY26 PRCRP Topic Areas. Clinical trials proposed may evaluate promising new products, pharmacologic agents (drugs or biologics), devices, clinical guidance, and/or emerging approaches and technologies. Proposed projects may range from small proof-of-concept trials (e.g., pilot, first-in-human, phase 0) that evaluate the effects of interventions or inform the design of more advanced trials to large-scale trials (up to phase III) to determine efficacy in relevant patient populations.

Distinctive Features:

• Applications to this award mechanism must include a clinical trial.

• Projects can range from phase 0 to phase III.

• If an Investigational New Drug (IND) application, Investigational Device Exemption (IDE), or equivalent, is required, a regulatory application must be submitted to the relevant regulatory agency by the Clinical Trial Award application submission deadline. The regulatory application should be specific to the product and indication to be tested in the proposed clinical trial.

• Applications are required to include patient advocates.

• Animal studies are NOT allowed under this award mechanism. All preclinical work must be completed prior to the award start date.
