About this opportunity

The Department of the Army Medical Command is soliciting applications for the Ovarian Cancer Clinical Trial Academy–Early-Career Investigator Award with a pre-application deadline of September 15, 2026, and a full application deadline of October 1, 2026. The principal investigator must be an early-career investigator within 12 years of completion of their last postdoctoral research position, clinical fellowship, or equivalent and must commit no less than 25% effort to the award and OCCTA activities for the first two years.

Eligible applicants include extramural and intramural Department of War organizations, domestic and foreign entities, and for-profit and nonprofit organizations. Cost sharing is not required. The Defense Health Agency expects to allot approximately $4.2 million to fund three awards at $1.4 million per award over a maximum four-year period of performance.

Research must support translational research and small-scale, early-phase clinical trials in ovarian cancer. Preliminary data are required but need not derive from ovarian cancer research. A Designated Mentor who is an independent, established clinical trialist with an active clinical trial and strong record of mentoring early-career investigators is mandatory; current OCCTA Designated Mentors cannot mentor additional early-career investigators unless their current award ends by July 2027.

Full applications require a 15-page project narrative, technical and lay abstracts, statement of work, career development and sustainment plan, impact statement, mentor letters, statement of eligibility, biographical sketches, budgets, and supporting documentation. Direct cost restrictions include mandatory annual OCCTA workshop travel and allowance for two scientific/technical meeting travels annually in addition to the required OCCTA meeting. Post-award requirements include quarterly and annual technical progress reports, registration on ClinicalTrials.gov, and results submission.

The Assistance Listing is 12.420 (Military Medical Research and Development).

Synopsis

Summary: Created in FY23, the Ovarian Cancer Clinical Trial Academy (OCCTA) supports the next generation of Early-Career Investigators (ECIs) in clinical trial research to produce effective treatments and cures for ovarian cancer. The OCCTA, through its Leadership, provides for professional and leadership development of the ECIs to include skills and competencies needed to execute clinical trials, providing intensive mentoring, national networking, collaborations, and a peer group for junior clinical trialists. The OCCTA will bring together established investigators (the Academy Dean and Assistant Dean), established Career Guides (mentors), and a group of ECIs/Scholars to conduct successful, highly productive clinical trials in ovarian cancer.

Distinctive Features: Research funded under this FY26 funding opportunity will support translational research and small-scale, early-phase clinical trials in ovarian cancer. Preliminary data are required, however, these data do not necessarily need to be derived from the ovarian cancer research field. The ECI must be within 12 years of their last postdoctoral research position (Ph.D.), clinical fellowship (M.D.), or equivalent at the time of full application submission deadline. The ECI must commit no less than 25% effort to this award and/or OCCTA activities for the first two years. The Designated Mentor must be a clinical trialist with a strong record of mentoring and training early-career investigators.
