About this opportunity
The Defense Health Agency (CDMRP) seeks applications for the Ovarian Cancer Academy - Early-Career Investigator Award by October 1, 2026, with a total cost cap of $1.125 million per award and eligibility restricted to principal investigators within five years of completing postdoctoral research or clinical fellowship as of the application deadline.
Eligible applicants include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, foreign and domestic entities, for-profit and nonprofit organizations, and public or private entities. The principal investigator cannot hold concurrent career development awards and must commit approximately 50% protected time for ovarian cancer research and Academy activities, with a minimum 25% effort for the first two years. A Designated Mentor must be an independent, established ovarian cancer researcher with funding history and peer-reviewed publications.
The CDMRP expects to allocate approximately $4.5 million to fund approximately four applications over a maximum four-year period. Funds expire for use on September 30, 2032. The award supports intensive mentoring, national networking, collaborations, and peer engagement for junior faculty through monthly webinars, annual workshops, and ongoing communication with other Early-Career Investigators, Mentors, and the Academy Dean and Assistant Dean. Clinical trials are not permitted under this mechanism.
The two-step application process requires submission of a one-page Letter of Intent by September 15, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. ET via eBRAP, followed by a full application due October 1, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. ET through Grants.gov (extramural) or eBRAP (intramural). Full applications must include 13 attachments: 12-page project narrative, technical and lay abstracts, statement of work, career development and sustainment plan, impact statement, Designated Mentor and other mentor letters, eligibility statement, and supporting documentation. Peer review is scheduled for November 2026, with programmatic review in January 2027. Funding is allocated under CFDA 12.420 (Military Medical Research and Development).
Synopsis
Summary: Initially created in FY09, the OCRP Ovarian Cancer Academy (OCA) is a unique, interactive virtual academy providing intensive mentoring, national networking, collaborations, and a peer group for junior faculty. The overarching goal of the OCA is to conduct innovative and impactful ovarian cancer research while developing successful, highly productive ovarian cancer researchers in a collaborative research and career development environment.
Distinctive Features: The OCA is a virtual career development and research training platform that consists of Early-Career Investigators (ECIs), their Designated Mentors, and an Academy Dean and Assistant Dean. The OCA-ECI Award is not a traditional career development award; the ECI is expected to participate in monthly webinars and annual workshops and to communicate and collaborate with other members of the Academy (other ECIs, Mentors, the Dean and Assistant Dean) as well as with the advocacy community.
