About this opportunity

The Department of the Army Medical Command is soliciting applications for the Fiscal Year 2026 Orthopaedic Research Program Clinical Research Award, a competitive grants program that funds clinical research and trials addressing orthopaedic injury and sequelae, with a full application deadline of November 18, 2026 and a pre-application deadline of August 19, 2026.

Eligible applicants include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, foreign and domestic organizations, for-profit and nonprofit entities, and public or private entities. Independent investigators at all career levels may serve as Principal Investigator. Cost sharing is not required.

The program offers two research levels. Research Level 1 (RL1) supports clinical research addressing at least one of four focus areas: Ligamentous Trauma, Osseointegration Outcomes, Return-to-Duty Strategies, or Military Women's Health. Research Level 2 (RL2) supports clinical trials addressing at least one of three focus areas: Ligamentous Trauma, Limb Stabilization and Protection, or Return-to-Duty Strategies. RL2 applications must constitute clinical trials with defined study populations, intervention availability, and demonstrated study team expertise.

The program intends to fund approximately two RL1 awards at $2.0 million per award and approximately three RL2 awards at $3.2 million per award. The maximum period of performance is four years for both levels. Awards are anticipated no later than September 30, 2027.

All applications require preliminary and/or published data relevant to the proposed research. Direct cost restrictions prohibit animal research while requiring travel for presentation at a Department of War-sponsored meeting during years 3 or 4. Applications must address how the proposed research will impact patient care and reduce the burden of orthopaedic injury. Submissions follow a two-step process through eBRAP for pre-applications and either Grants.gov (extramural) or eBRAP (intramural) for full applications. The program operates under CFDA 12.420 (Military Medical Research and Development).
