About this opportunity
The Department of the Army Medical Command is soliciting applications for the Orthopaedic Research Program Applied Research Award focused on advancing optimal treatment and restoration of function for individuals with orthopaedic injuries sustained during combat or service-related activities, with a full application deadline of November 18, 2026. Applicant types are unrestricted; eligible recipients include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, including foreign and domestic organizations and for-profit and nonprofit entities. Independent investigators at all career levels are eligible as Principal Investigators regardless of ethnicity, nationality, or citizenship status, with no limitation on the number of applications an investigator may lead. No cost share is required.
The CDMRP expects to allot approximately $3.8 million to fund approximately four applications, with a total cost cap of $950,000 per award and a maximum period of performance of three years. Period of performance and place of performance are not specified in the source material.
Applied research is defined as work that refines concepts and ideas into potential solutions with a view toward evaluating technical feasibility of promising new knowledge products, pharmacologic agents, behavioral and rehabilitation interventions, diagnostic and therapeutic techniques, clinical guidance, and/or emerging approaches and technologies. Preliminary data is required. Research must address military relevance benefiting Service Members, Veterans, and their families. Clinical trials are prohibited; clinical research is only permitted if exempt under 32 CFR 219.104(d) or eligible for expedited review. Five focus areas are supported: Battlefield Fracture-Related Infection, Composite Tissue Regeneration, Limb Stabilization and Protection, Osteointegration Outcomes, and Return-to-Duty Strategies.
Applications are evaluated through a two-tier process: peer review for technical merit, followed by programmatic review for funding recommendations based on relevance to FY26 ORP priorities, program portfolio composition, and military benefit. The pre-application submission deadline is August 19, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. ET, with invitations to submit full applications issued September 25, 2026. The funding opportunity is assigned to CFDA 12.420 (Military Medical Research and Development).
