About this opportunity
The Department of the Army Medical Command is soliciting applications for the Neurofibromatosis Research Program Exploration-Hypothesis Development Award to support initial exploration of innovative, high-risk, high-gain concepts in neurofibromatosis research, with full applications due September 22, 2026. Applicant types are unrestricted; eligible organizations include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, foreign and domestic organizations, for-profit and nonprofit entities. Cost sharing is not required. The CDMRP expects to award approximately $160,000 per application with a total program allotment of $1.28 million supporting roughly eight awards. The period of performance is a maximum two years. Research must address at least one of the FY26 NFRP Areas of Emphasis, including NF2 and schwannomatosis-related areas, endpoint validation and biomarker discovery, data science applications, non-tumor manifestations, genetics/genomics/epigenetics, preclinical efficacy studies, target identification and drug discovery, nutritional and environmental modifiers, or health services research. Investigators at all academic levels, including postdoctoral fellows, may serve as Principal Investigator; each investigator may be named PI on only one FY26 NFRP EHDA application. Preliminary and/or published data is encouraged but not required. Direct costs may be requested for travel supporting multi-institutional collaborations and for one investigator to attend one scientific/technical meeting per year. Clinical trials and clinical trial costs are prohibited. Research involving animals must obtain approval from both the local Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and the DHA R&D Office of Research and Regulatory Compliance Animal Care and Use Review Office, with three to four months allocated for ACURO review. Pre-applications are due September 8, 2026. Peer review is scheduled for December 2026; programmatic review for March 2027. Awards are made under CFDA 12.420, Military Medical Research and Development.
Synopsis
Summary: The fiscal year 2026 (FY26) Neurofibromatosis Research Program (NFRP) Exploration-Hypothesis Development Award (EHDA) supports the initial exploration of innovative, high-risk, high-gain, and potentially groundbreaking concepts in neurofibromatosis (NF) research. Studies supported by this award mechanism should lay the groundwork for future avenues of scientific investigation. The proposed research project should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on strong scientific rationale and study design.
Distinctive Features:
• Innovation: The proposed research project should be innovative. Innovative research may introduce a novel paradigm, challenge existing paradigms, examine existing problems from novel perspectives, or exhibit other highly creative qualities.
• Preliminary Data: Preliminary and/or published data is encouraged but not required.
