About this opportunity
The Department of the Army Medical Command's Multiple Sclerosis Research Program Investigator-Initiated Research Award supports rigorous, high-impact research projects addressing multiple sclerosis through grants to eligible extramural and intramural organizations. Applicants must submit a two-step application process: a one-page Letter of Intent due July 30, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time, followed by a full application due August 13, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. ET. All research projects must address at least one of five focus areas (Central Nervous System Repair, Protection and Regenerative Potential in MS; Correlates of Disease Activity and Progression in MS; Biology and Measurement of MS Symptoms; or Mechanisms Contributing to MS Etiology, Prodrome, Onset and Disease Course) and exclude clinical trials while incorporating preliminary and/or published MS-relevant data. Principal Investigators may apply as either Established Investigators (independent at any career level) or New Investigators (within five years of independent faculty appointment with no more than $300,000 in prior MS research funding). Applications undergo two-tier evaluation: peer review assesses technical merit, research strategy and feasibility, impact, and personnel qualifications, while programmatic review evaluates relevance to MSRP priorities and portfolio composition. Peer review occurs in December 2026, with programmatic review scheduled for February 2027.
The Defense Health Agency anticipates allocating approximately $6.0 million to fund approximately six awards, with a total cost cap of $1.0 million per award over a maximum three-year performance period. Cost sharing is not required, and awards will be obligated no later than September 30, 2027, utilizing FY26 funds expiring September 30, 2032. Research will be conducted at eligible domestic and foreign extramural and intramural organizations, including for-profit and nonprofit entities, with multi-institutional collaboration travel and one investigator's annual scientific meeting attendance permitted as allowable direct costs.
Synopsis
Summary: The fiscal year 2026 (FY26) Multiple Sclerosis Research Program (MSRP) Investigator-Initiated Research Award (IIRA) supports highly rigorous, high-impact research projects that have the potential to make an important contribution to Multiple Sclerosis (MS) research, patient care, and/or quality of life. All applications must address at least one of the FY26 MSRP IIRA focus areas. Research projects may focus on any phase of research, excluding clinical trials. The rationale for a research idea may be derived from laboratory discovery, clinical trial results, population-based studies, a clinician's firsthand knowledge of patients, or anecdotal data. Applications must include preliminary and/or published data that are relevant to MS and the proposed research project.
Distinctive Features: This funding mechanism includes two options: Established Investigator or New Investigator. The New Investigator option supports applicants early in their faculty appointments.
