About this opportunity
The Department of the Army Medical Command, through the Defense Health Agency's Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP), is seeking research proposals focused on Multiple Sclerosis investigations from early-stage postdoctoral investigators. Eligible applicants must possess a doctoral degree, have four years or less of postdoctoral research experience, and commit at least 50% effort to the proposed research under the guidance of designated mentors. Proposed research must address at least one of five designated focus areas: Central Nervous System Repair, Protection, and Regenerative Potential in MS; Correlates of Disease Activity and Progression in MS; Biology and Measurement of MS Symptoms; Mechanisms Contributing to MS Etiology, Prodrome, Onset and Disease Course; or related research relevant to active-duty Service Members, Veterans, and military beneficiaries. The evaluation process employs a two-tier review system with peer review assessing technical merit based on PI qualifications, mentor experience, research project design, researcher development plan, and anticipated impact, followed by programmatic review selecting applications that best achieve program objectives. Critical deadlines include the pre-application deadline of July 30, 2026, the full application deadline of August 13, 2026, and the confidential letters of recommendation deadline of August 20, 2026.
The CDMRP expects to allocate approximately $1.20 million to fund approximately four awards, with individual award caps of $300,000 per award over a maximum period of performance of two years. Awards will be made no later than September 30, 2027, utilizing FY26 funds that expire September 30, 2032. Research may be conducted at eligible extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, including foreign and domestic organizations, for-profit and nonprofit entities, and public or private institutions, with extramural organizations submitting applications through Grants.gov and intramural DOW organizations submitting through eBRAP.
Synopsis
Summary: The fiscal year 2026 (FY26) Multiple Sclerosis Research Program (MSRP) Early Investigator Research Award (EIRA) supports Multiple Sclerosis-focused research opportunities for individuals in the early stages of their careers, under the guidance of one or more designated Mentors. All applications must address at least one of the FY26 MSRP EIRA focus areas.
Distinctive Features: This opportunity allows for early-stage investigators to develop a research project, investigate a problem or question in MS research, and further their intellectual development as an MS researcher of the future. All application components for the EIRA are expected to be written by the Principal Investigator (PI), with appropriate direction from the Mentor(s).
