About this opportunity
The Department of the Army Medical Command is soliciting applications for the Kidney Cancer Research Program Idea Development Award to support high-impact kidney cancer research with application deadlines of September 14, 2026 (pre-application) and September 28, 2026 (full application). The program expects to fund approximately eight applications with total cost caps of $900,000 for single Principal Investigator awards or $1.2 million for Partnering PI Option awards, allocating approximately $7.8 million in FY26 funds.
Eligible applicants include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, foreign and domestic organizations, and for-profit and nonprofit entities. Investigators at or above the assistant professor level may serve as Principal Investigator, Initiating PI, or Partnering PI. No cost share is required. The Partnering PI Option supports meaningful collaborations between two investigators on a single application; only the Initiating PI submits a pre-application, but all PIs submit full applications, with the Partnering PI submitting an abbreviated package for their distinct portion of work. All associated applications for a research project may be withdrawn if the initiating or partnering application is rejected or administratively withdrawn.
Period of performance runs a maximum of three years, with awards anticipated no later than September 30, 2027. Applications must address at least one of seven FY26 focus areas: basic biology research, screening and detection strategies, rare kidney cancer treatments, novel therapeutic strategies, quality of life improvements, outcomes enhancement for high-risk patients, and next-generation researcher development. Applicants must also select at least one specified kidney cancer disease type. Clinical trials are prohibited.
Two-tier review evaluates research strategy and feasibility, impact, and personnel qualifications through peer review, followed by programmatic review considering peer ratings, relevance to KCRP priorities, and portfolio balance. Required application components include a 12-page project narrative, preliminary data, technical abstract, lay abstract, statement of work, and impact statement. The funding opportunity falls under CFDA 12.420 (Military Medical Research and Development).
Synopsis
Summary: The fiscal year 2026 (FY26) Kidney Cancer Research Program (KCRP) Idea Development Award (IDA) supports the development of high-impact ideas that advance the understanding of kidney cancer and ultimately lead to improved patient outcomes. The research project should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on strong scientific rationale and a well-developed and articulated research approach. Personnel on the proposed team should have a strong background in kidney cancer research.
Distinctive Features:
· Partnering Principal Investigator Option: Supports meaningful and productive partnerships between two investigators, termed the Initiating Principal Investigator (PI) and Partnering PI, collaborating on a single application. Only the Initiating PI will submit a pre-application, but all PIs will need to submit full applications. The Partnering PI's application is an abbreviated package specific to their distinct portion of the research project. Be advised, all associated applications for a research project may be withdrawn if the initiating or partnering application is rejected or administratively withdrawn.
