About this opportunity
The Department of the Army Medical Command is soliciting applications for the Fiscal Year 2026 Kidney Cancer Research Program Concept Award, with a full application due date of August 11, 2026. Approximately $840,000 will fund approximately 7 awards at $120,000 per award maximum, with a 1-year period of performance. This is a blinded funding mechanism; applications must not identify the Principal Investigator, collaborators, or their organizations in any proposal materials, and doing so results in administrative rejection.
Eligible applicants include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, as well as foreign and domestic for-profit and nonprofit organizations and public or private entities. Principal Investigators must be at or above the postdoctoral fellow level; each investigator may serve as PI on only one FY26 KCRP Concept Award application.
The award supports highly innovative, untested, potentially groundbreaking concepts and basic kidney cancer research. Preliminary data are not allowed. Applications must address at least one of seven FY26 KCRP Focus Areas (basic biology research, screening and early detection, rare kidney cancers, novel therapeutic strategies, quality of life, outcomes in high-risk populations, or next-generation researcher development) and at least one kidney cancer disease type. Clinical trials are not permitted. All projects must adhere to standards for rigorous study design including STROBE, CONSORT, SPIRIT, and ARRIVE 2.0 guidelines.
A two-step submission process is required: Letter of Intent through eBRAP (pre-application deadline July 28, 2026), followed by full application through Grants.gov for extramural organizations or eBRAP for intramural Department of War organizations. Peer review is scheduled for October 2026, programmatic review for December 2026, and awards are anticipated by September 30, 2027. Awards use FY26 funds expiring September 30, 2032. Evaluation criteria include Innovation, Impact, and Research Strategy during peer review; programmatic review assesses adherence to funding intent, programmatic relevance, portfolio composition, and relative innovation and impact. CFDA 12.420.
Synopsis
Summary: The fiscal year 2026 (FY26) Kidney Cancer Research Program (KCRP) Concept Award supports highly innovative, untested, potentially groundbreaking concepts, theories, paradigms and/or basic kidney cancer research. This award mechanism supports high-risk studies that have the potential to reveal entirely new avenues for investigation in kidney cancer. Applications must describe how the new concept will be innovative and present a novel course of investigation in the field of kidney cancer.
Distinctive Features:
• Preliminary data are not allowed.
• This is a blinded funding mechanism. Applications to this funding opportunity will undergo a double-blinded peer review. Applications must not include any materials that may identify the Principal Investigator (PI), a collaborator, or the organization of the PI or collaborator.
• Due to the blinded nature of the review process, identifying or making references to the PI, collaborator(s), or their organization(s) in the proposal (Project Narrative, List of Abbreviations, Acronyms, Symbols, Statement of Work, Impact Statement and Innovation Statement) is prohibited and will result in administrative rejection of the application.
