About this opportunity

The Defense Health Agency is soliciting applications for the Epilepsy Research Program Virtual Post-Traumatic Epilepsy Research Center Faculty Award, with a full application deadline of August 17, 2026 and letter of intent due August 3, 2026. The principal investigator must be an early-career investigator or researcher new to post-traumatic epilepsy (PTE) research, evidenced by only nominal publication and funding history in the field. Each faculty member must designate a Career Guide holding an independent research position with a strong record of funding, publications, and mentoring experience. A single investigator may serve as principal investigator on only one FY26 ViP-TERC Faculty Award application.

Extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations are eligible. The program expects to fund approximately four Faculty Awards with total cost caps of $800,000 per award over a maximum period of performance of three years. Direct costs must include workshop expenses and may include Career Guide support (maximum $30,000 per year), virtual Center participation costs, collaborative research approach costs, travel for multi-institutional collaborations, data sharing costs, and one investigator's annual travel to present results at a scientific meeting. Clinical trials are not permitted; preclinical studies, observational research, and ancillary studies with human subjects are allowable.

All applications must address at least one of four ERP focus areas: Markers and Mechanisms of PTE, Epidemiological Characterization of PTE, Longitudinal Studies of PTE Progression, or Innovative Research Tools and Technologies. Faculty members must participate in all ViP-TERC development and training activities, including monthly calls with leadership, biennial multiday workshops, and alternate-year one-day workshops. Peer review is scheduled for October 2026 and programmatic review for December 2026, with awards expected by September 30, 2027. The assistance listing is CFDA 12.420 (Military Medical Research and Development).

Synopsis

Summary: The fiscal year 2026 (FY26) Epilepsy Research Program (ERP) seeks to advance post-traumatic epilepsy (PTE) research through development of investigators new to the PTE field. To accomplish this, the ERP is soliciting Faculty members to join the Virtual Post-Traumatic Epilepsy Research Center (ViP-TERC). The ERP ViP-TERC is a unique, interactive virtual research center providing intensive mentoring, national networking, collaborations, and a peer group for new PTE investigators. The overarching goal of the ViP-TERC is to develop successful, highly productive PTE researchers in a collaborative research and career development environment to enhance quality and expand quantity of the PTE research field.

Distinctive Features: This award mechanism focuses on both the Faculty member's research and career potential. The mechanism requires the Faculty member to designate a Career Guide. The Career Guide must have a track record of successful mentorship coupled with a strong record of funding and publications.

**NEW for FY26** An investigator may be named on only one FY26 ERP Virtual Post-Traumatic Epilepsy Research Center - Faculty Award application as a Principal Investigator.
