About this opportunity
The Defense Health Agency is soliciting applications for the Epilepsy Research Partnership Award to fund collaborative research addressing post-traumatic epilepsy, with a full application deadline of August 17, 2026, and a single award ceiling of $2.0 million total cost. The program is restricted to partnerships comprising a minimum of two investigators (one Initiating PI and at least one Partnering PI), with each investigator permitted to serve as PI on only one FY26 Research Partnership Award application. Eligible applicants include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, foreign and domestic organizations, and for-profit and nonprofit entities.
Research must address at least one of four focus areas: Markers and Mechanisms of PTE, Epidemiological Characterization of PTE, Longitudinal Studies of PTE Progression, or Innovative Research Tools and Technologies. Clinical trials are not permitted. Applications must include preliminary and/or published data demonstrating the research team's ability to execute the chosen TBI model and record subsequent seizure activity. Community collaboration with people living with PTE is encouraged but not required. Direct costs cannot fund travel to scientific meetings beyond one investigator attending one meeting annually.
Only the Initiating PI submits a pre-application (due August 3, 2026); all PIs submit full applications, with Partnering PI applications as abbreviated packages. If recommended for funding, each PI receives a separate award to their respective organization(s). A two-tier review process (peer review in October 2026 and programmatic review in December 2026) evaluates research strategy, partnership quality, impact, and personnel qualifications. The period of performance is three years maximum, with awards issued no later than September 30, 2027. The program operates under CFDA 12.420, Military Medical Research and Development.
Synopsis
Summary: The intent of the Epilepsy Research Program (ERP) Research Partnership Award is to support new or existing research partnerships focused on collaboratively addressing critical questions relevant to post-traumatic epilepsy (PTE) in a manner that would be unachievable through separate efforts. It is expected that investigators will utilize their distinct but complementary perspectives to synergistically address a central problem or question critical to PTE research and those living with PTE, their families and/or their care partners.
Distinctive Features: This funding mechanism requires that a minimum of two investigators partner in one overarching study. Only the Initiating Principal Investigator (PI) will submit a pre-application, but all PIs will need to submit full applications. The Partnering PI(s) application is an abbreviated package specific to their distinct portion of the research project. If recommended for funding, each PI will be named on separate awards to the recipient organization(s). Be advised, all associated applications for a research project may be withdrawn if the initiating or partnering application is rejected or administratively withdrawn.
**NEW for FY26** An investigator may be named on only one FY26 ERP Research Partnership Award application as a PI.
