About this opportunity
The Department of the Army Medical Command is soliciting applications for the Fiscal Year 2026 Epilepsy Research Program Leveraging Research Award, with full applications due August 17, 2026. The program anticipates funding approximately two applications with total cost caps of $800,000 per award, approximately $1.6 million in total program funding, and a maximum performance period of three years. No cost share is required.
Eligible applicants include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, domestic and foreign, for-profit and nonprofit entities. An investigator may serve as Principal Investigator regardless of career level, but may be named as PI on only one FY26 ERP Leveraging Research Award application. This single-PI-per-application restriction is new for FY26.
The award supports basic, translational, and clinical research that repurposes or expands existing research resources to accelerate understanding of post-traumatic epilepsy and associated comorbidities. The study must adapt an existing cohort, resource, research tool, or intervention for which PTE was not a prior focus, provide strong scientific justification for adding PTE-specific elements, and demonstrate how expansion will significantly advance knowledge of the condition. Applications must address at least one of four focus areas: Markers and Mechanisms of PTE; Epidemiological Characterization of PTE; Longitudinal Studies of PTE Progression; or Innovative Research Tools and Technologies.
Pre-applications are due August 3, 2026. Full applications require a 15-page project narrative, technical abstract, lay abstract, statement of work, impact statement, research sharing plan, transition plan, biographical sketches, budget, and supporting documentation. Applications involving animal research must include an animal research plan; those employing community collaboration with the PTE lived-experience community must include a community collaboration plan.
Review occurs in two tiers: peer review evaluates technical merit; programmatic review assesses relevance to program priorities. Highest-scoring applications are not automatically recommended for funding based on various programmatic factors. The award uses the grant instrument under 31 USC 6304. This opportunity falls under CFDA 12.420, Military Medical Research and Development.
