About this opportunity

The Department of the Army Medical Command is soliciting applications for Idea Development Awards under the Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Research Program, with a full application deadline of September 18, 2026, and a letter of intent due September 4, 2026. Applicants must submit preliminary data demonstrating feasibility; clinical trials are not permitted.

The program is unrestricted by applicant type. Three separate career-based eligibility categories apply: Established Investigator (independent investigators at any academic level); New Investigator–Early Stage (independent investigators within 10 years of first faculty appointment, reviewed separately); and New Investigator–Transitioning (investigators from other fields transitioning to DMD research, reviewed separately). All applicants require independent investigator status or equivalent.

The DMDRP expects to fund approximately 5 awards totaling $2.5 million, with a cost ceiling of $500,000 per award over a maximum 2-year period of performance. FY26 funds obligated within 24 months remain available for disbursement through September 30, 2032.

Research must address development of safe and effective therapies targeting primary DMD pathology. The program strongly encourages projects investigating therapies demonstrating efficacy across the life span, including infants, toddlers, and nonambulatory individuals. Clinical research involving human subjects is permitted; clinical trials are not.

Applications undergo two-tier review. Peer review evaluates technical merit based on impact, research strategy and feasibility, personnel, and research outcomes. Programmatic review assesses relevance to DMDRP priorities and military health. Awards are anticipated by September 30, 2027. Peer review is scheduled for December 2026, with programmatic review in February 2027.

Pre-applications are submitted through eBRAP; extramural organizations submit full applications through Grants.gov, while intramural DOW organizations submit through eBRAP. Applicants must register with SAM.gov, eBRAP.org, and Grants.gov prior to submission.

The opportunity is assigned to the Military Medical Research and Development program (CFDA 12.420).

Synopsis

Summary: The fiscal year 2026 (FY26) Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Research Program (DMDRP) Idea Development Award (IDA) promotes new ideas that are still in the early stages of development and have the potential to yield impactful data and new avenues of investigation. This award supports impactful, high-risk/high-reward research that could lead to critical discoveries or major advancements that will accelerate progress in improving outcomes for individuals with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) in the near term. Applications should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on strong scientific rationale. The DMDRP strongly encourages research projects investigating therapies designed to demonstrate efficacy cross the life span, including infants, toddlers and nonambulatory individuals.

Distinctive Features: The FY26 DMDRP IDA mechanism offers three eligibility career categories:

• The Established Investigator category is for independent investigators at all academic levels, or equivalent

• The New Investigator - Early-Stage category is for independent investigators early in their careers (i.e., within 10 years of their first faculty appointment or equivalent). Applicants in this category will be reviewed separately from Established Investigators.

• The New Investigator - Transitioning category is for independent investigators at all academic levels, or equivalent, in an area other than muscular dystrophy who are seeking to transition to a career in DMD, thereby bringing their expertise to the field. Applicants in this category will be reviewed separately from Established Investigators.

Preliminary data relevant to DMD that supports the feasibility of the research hypotheses and research approaches are required for all applications. Clinical trials or clinical trial aims are not allowed.
