About this opportunity

The Department of the Army Medical Command is soliciting applications for the Breast Cancer Research Program Clinical Research Extension Award, with full applications due November 18, 2026. The award mechanism supports a single principal investigator or two partnering PIs and requires the research team to include two or more breast cancer consumer advocates; failure to submit all associated PI applications by the deadline may result in administrative withdrawal.

Eligible applicants include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, domestic and foreign entities, and for-profit and nonprofit organizations. No cost share is required.

The Defense Health Agency expects to allocate approximately $8.4 million to fund one award. Total cost caps are $7 million for single PI applications or $8.4 million for Partnering PI Option applications. The maximum period of performance is four years; awards will be made no later than September 30, 2027, using FY26 funds that expire September 30, 2032.

The award supports research that extends data collection, follow-up, and analysis of existing breast cancer clinical studies to maximize the clinically relevant impact of patient participation by addressing knowledge lost due to early trial termination, limited patient follow-up, or suboptimal sample and data collection and analysis. All applications must address at least one of the FY26 BCRP overarching challenges or provide adequate justification for exception. Applications must not propose initiating new clinical trials or enrolling new patients.

Applications undergo two-tier review. Peer review evaluates technical merit; programmatic review assesses relevance to program priorities, military relevance, and alignment with funding opportunity intent. Pre-applications are due November 4, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. ET, with peer review scheduled for January 2027 and programmatic review for March 2027.

The funding is issued under CFDA 12.420 (Military Medical Research and Development).

Synopsis

Summary: The fiscal year 2026 (FY26) Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP) Clinical Research Extension Award supports research that extends the data collection, follow-up, and analysis of breast cancer clinical studies. The intent of this award mechanism is to increase the clinically relevant impact of breast cancer patient participation in clinical studies by addressing the knowledge lost due to early trial termination, limited patient follow-up, or suboptimal sample and/or data collection and analysis. All applications must address at least one of the FY26 BCRP overarching challenges or provide adequate justification for exception.

Distinctive Features:

• The research team must include two or more breast cancer consumer advocates.

• This funding mechanism allows for a single Principal Investigator (PI), or two partnering PIs referred to as the Initiating PI and the Partnering PI. For the Partnering PI Option (PPIO), only the Initiating PI will submit a pre-application, but both PIs will need to submit at the full application stage. Be advised, failure to submit all associated (Initiating and Partnering PI) applications by the deadline may result in administrative withdrawal.
