About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for Dissemination and Implementation Research in Health (R21 Clinical Trial Optional) grants, with an application due date of January 7, 2028. The award ceiling is up to $275,000 in total costs over a two-year period.

Eligible applicants include independent school districts, public and private higher education institutions, state and local governments, tribal governments and organizations (both federally recognized and not federally recognized), county and city governments, special district governments, small businesses, nonprofits (both 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), for-profit organizations, and other eligible entity types including Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian serving institutions, HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, faith-based and community-based organizations, and non-domestic entities where applicable.

The program funds studies identifying, developing, and testing strategies to overcome barriers to adoption, adaptation, integration, scale-up, and sustainability of evidence-based interventions, practices, programs, tools, treatments, guidelines, and policies. Applications emphasizing equitable dissemination and implementation among underrepresented communities are encouraged. The program also welcomes research on de-implementation of ineffective, unproven, low-value, or harmful practices, and studies advancing dissemination and implementation research methods and measures. All applications must align with the mission of one of the NIH Institutes or Centers.

The R21 mechanism funds exploratory and developmental research. Applications undergo dual scientific review by peer reviewers and advisory council consideration based on significance, approach, innovation, investigator competency, resource adequacy, budget appropriateness, and program relevance. The review and award process typically spans four to nine months from submission.

This opportunity operates under multiple NIH parent programs, including Trans-NIH Research Support (CFDA 93.310), Mental Health Research Grants (CFDA 93.242), Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279), Environmental Health (CFDA 93.113), Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research (CFDA 93.865), and additional NIH institutes focused on aging, neuroscience, complementary health, and other disease-specific research portfolios.
