About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for the Gabriella Miller Kids First Pediatric Research Program to sequence samples from pediatric cancer and congenital anomaly cohorts, with applications due January 11, 2027. This program provides resource access awards (X01)—not direct funding—that deliver whole genome sequencing and related genomic services at NIH-designated sequencing centers; no cost share is required.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), for-profit organizations, state and local governments, Indian tribal governments (federally recognized), and other domestic entities. Non-domestic entities and foreign components of U.S. organizations are not eligible. The program accepts applications proposing whole genome, exome, and transcriptome sequencing, as well as clinical-grade sequencing, long-read sequencing, proteomics, and epigenomic assays of tumor or affected tissue when justified. Applicants must submit existing pediatric cohorts with extracted or ready-to-extract DNA and RNA samples and are encouraged to propose cohorts that increase representation of existing Kids First Program projects.
Project period is one year. Data and associated clinical and phenotypic data become part of the Kids First Data Resource Center for community-wide sharing. Applicants must complete System for Award Management (SAM) registration, obtain a Unique Entity Identifier (UEI), register with eRA Commons, and register with Grants.gov before submission. Applications require institutional certification confirming consent for broad genomic data sharing, detailed sample inventory and quality information, comprehensive clinical and phenotypic documentation, family structure information where applicable, and a six-page research strategy addressing study population, data analysis plans, contribution to the Kids First Data Resource, consent and data sharing arrangements, and data management procedures. Scientific merit review occurs in March 2027, with earliest project start April 2027.
The program operates under CFDA 93.310 (Trans-NIH Research Support).
Synopsis
As part of the Gabriella Miller Kids First Pediatric Research Program (Kids First Program), the NIH invites applications to submit samples from pediatric cohorts for whole genome sequencing at a Kids First Program supported genomic data generating centers. Applicants are encouraged to propose sequencing of existing pediatric cancer or congenital anomaly cohorts to elucidate the genetic contribution (somatic and/or germline) to childhood cancers, to investigate the genetic etiology of congenital anomalies, to study the molecular basis of the associations between congenital anomalies and increased cancer risk, or to expand the range of pediatric disorders included within the Kids First Data Resource. The program will accept applications that propose whole genome, exome, and transcriptome sequencing, as well as clinical-grade sequencing, long-read sequencing, proteomics, and epigenomic assays of tumor or affected tissue, when justified. Applicants are encouraged to propose cohorts to increase representation of existing Kids First Program projects. These data, and associated clinical and phenotypic data, will become part of the Kids First Data Resource Center for sharing with the research community.
Eligibility
Refer to Section III. Eligibility Information in the NOFO for additional information on eligibility.Foreign Organizations/Foreign CollaborationsNon-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations) are not eligible to apply.Non-domestic (non-U.S.) components of U.S. Organizations are not eligible to apply.Foreign components, as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement, are not allowed.
