About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is soliciting R21 applications for novel theory and methods development to delineate how genetic and non-genetic factors contribute to complex trait variation across individuals, families, and populations, with applications due January 7, 2027. Clinical trials are not permitted.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally recognized and other), small businesses, for-profit organizations, and other entities including faith-based and community-based organizations, HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions, Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions, and non-domestic entities.

Proposed approaches must be interdisciplinary across natural and social sciences, account for interdependencies across scales of biological, social, and ecological organization, and make extensive use of theory, simulations, and validation using available large-scale datasets. The source does not specify award amounts, expected number of awards, period of performance, or cost-sharing requirements.

Evaluation criteria assess scientific merit and general significance of objectives; technical adequacy of experimental design and approach; competency of the investigator or group; adequacy of facilities and resources; necessity of budget components in relation to the proposed project; and relevance and importance to announced program objectives.

The opportunity is assigned to two federal grant programs: Cancer Control (CFDA 93.399) and Human Genome Research (CFDA 93.172). The application package uses FORMS-I with research-specific instructions; applicants must follow both general and research-designated form instructions.

Synopsis

The goal of this NOFO is to support R21 applications for novel theory and methods development that better delineate how genetic and non-genetic factors contribute to complex trait variation across individuals, families, and populations. Approaches should be interdisciplinary across the natural and social sciences, account for interdependencies across scales of biological, social, and ecological organization, and make extensive use of theory, simulations, and validation using available large-scale datasets

Eligibility

Other Eligible Applicants include the following: Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession.
