About this opportunity

The National Science Foundation's Directorate for Biological Sciences is soliciting applications for Core Research in Biological Sciences (BIO Core) grants supporting foundational and interdisciplinary research projects that expand knowledge of biology at any level of organization, from molecular to biome scale, with an application due date of October 5, 2076.

Eligible applicants include institutions of higher education (two- and four-year IHEs accredited and located in the US), non-profit non-academic organizations (independent museums, observatories, research laboratories, professional societies directly associated with educational or research activities and located in the US), and federally recognized Tribal Nations. Proposals may include funding to international branch campuses of US IHEs only if the proposer explains the benefits to the project of performance at the international location and justifies why activities cannot be performed at the US campus.

BIO Core funds single- and multi-investigator awards across scientific topics historically supported by NSF BIO as well as new areas of biological sciences. The portfolio is anticipated to include a range of budgets and durations, encompassing exploratory projects of smaller scope and long-horizon projects benefiting from longer-term commitment. Awards are subject to availability of funds.

The program operates under CFDA 47.074 (Biological Sciences). Applicants must register with NSF's Research.gov Account Management system, maintain valid System for Award Management (SAM) registration with active Unique Entity Identifiers (UEIs), and submit all materials via Grants.gov in PDF format, with project narratives limited to 15 pages and budget justifications to five pages. NSF recommends initiating submission at least five business days before the deadline.
