About this opportunity

The National Institute of Food and Agriculture at the Department of Agriculture seeks applications for its Community Food Projects Competitive Grants Program by July 16, 2026, offering approximately $4.8 million across three project types with a mandatory 1:1 matching requirement for two categories. The program funds nonprofit organizations, tribal organizations, public food program service providers, state Cooperative Extension Services, regional food systems centers, and institutions of higher education. Private nonprofit applicants must demonstrate prior experience in community food work involving small and medium-sized farms or job training and business development activities in low-income communities.

Three distinct funding tracks operate under this solicitation. Training and Technical Assistance awards one continuation multi-year project of up to four years, not to exceed $250,000 annually or $1 million total, with no matching requirement. Planning Projects provide $25,000 to $50,000 over 12 to 36 months with anticipated five awards and a 1:1 matching requirement. Community Food Projects provide $125,000 to $400,000 over up to 48 months with anticipated 15 awards and a 1:1 matching requirement. All project periods, including no-cost extensions, may not exceed five years.

Applicants must address at least one short-term and one long-term goal aligned with the program's focus on food security and community self-reliance. Projects should develop linkages between food system sectors, support entrepreneurial initiatives, create innovative for-profit and nonprofit partnerships, and promote comprehensive community-based responses to food insecurity. Communities partially or fully located in Opportunity Zones receive preference consideration. Applications require a Project Narrative of up to 10 pages plus 15 additional pages for figures and tables, a Data Management Plan, and supporting documentation. Submissions must be electronic through Grants.gov. Assistance Listing 10.225.
