About this opportunity
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) seeks applicants for a cooperative agreement to continue the Immune Tolerance Network (ITN), a clinical research collaborative focused on developing tolerogenic therapies for immune-mediated disorders, with applications due January 29, 2027. NIAID intends to fund one award of up to $27 million over a 7-year project period, with annual direct costs not to exceed $23 million per year.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, for-profit organizations, state and local governments, tribal governments, independent school districts, and faith-based or community-based organizations. Foreign subawards and subcontracts are prohibited. Only one application per institution is permitted, and a clinical trial is required.
The ITN operates through four integrated functional areas: Leadership, Clinical Operations, Core Laboratory, and Bioinformatics. The primary objective is to develop tolerogenic therapies across three clinical areas: allergic diseases and asthma; autoimmune diseases; and immune-mediated consequences of transplantation. Core functions include designing and conducting clinical trials and performing integrated mechanistic studies to investigate basic mechanisms of immune tolerance and develop validated immune assays to monitor tolerance induction, maintenance, and loss. The PD/PI(s) must commit a minimum of 3.6 person-months per year.
Applicants must submit a detailed research strategy addressing the Network overview, leadership structure, clinical operations, core laboratory functions, and bioinformatics infrastructure. All funded investigators must share data publicly through the Immunology Database and Analysis Portal (ImmPort), and a Data Management and Sharing Plan is required. Applications are subject to standard NIH registration requirements including System for Award Management (SAM), eRA Commons, and Grants.gov, and must be submitted electronically by 5:00 PM local time on the due date. CFDA 93.855 (Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research) applies.
