About this opportunity

The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is seeking cooperative agreements to develop and implement chronic wasting disease (CWD) control and prevention activities in both farmed and wild cervid populations. This opportunity solicits proposals for surveillance, testing, management, and response activities, including development and evaluation of prevention and control techniques, with particular emphasis on amplification assays, predictive genetics applications, and educational outreach to stakeholders and tribal entities. Eligible applicants include state governments, tribal governments, higher education institutions, and nonprofit research organizations; research institutions must demonstrate published peer-reviewed articles and relevant expertise in transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. Projects will be evaluated based on alignment with five priority funding areas, feasibility of success, performance parameters, availability of required resources, anticipated impact of outcomes, and cost effectiveness. The application deadline is June 15, 2026, at 5:00 PM Eastern Daylight Savings Time, with all submissions required through ezFedGrants; proposals received after this deadline will not be reviewed or considered.

APHIS is allocating approximately $12.05 million in total funding across three separate opportunities: Wild Cervid ($5.5 million), Wild Cervid - Tribal Nations Only ($500,000), and Farmed Cervid ($6.05 million), with up to $2 million of the farmed cervid funds available for non-competitive cooperative agreements to address CWD outbreaks. Individual cooperative agreements are anticipated to range from $10,000 to $250,000, with APHIS expecting to award approximately 55 agreements total; applications for farmed cervid activities may request additional indemnification funding beyond the $250,000 cap for depopulation of CWD-affected or exposed herds. The performance period will commence on or before September 30, 2026, and must be completed within 12 months, with a one-time extension opportunity of up to 12 additional months available. Projects may be conducted at various locations where cervid populations exist or are managed, with performance sites including state wildlife and agriculture facilities, university laboratories, tribal lands, and farmed cervid operations across multiple states and regions.

Synopsis

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) Veterinary Services (VS) and Wildlife Services (WS) is announcing the availability of around $12,050,000 in cooperative agreement funding to control and prevent CWD in farmed and wild cervids of which up to $2,000,000 may be awarded through non-competitive cooperative agreements as needed to address CWD outbreaks in farmed cervids. The amount available is based on the fiscal year 2026 (FY26) Congressional appropriations language and directions. Applications must be submitted through ezFedGrants using the funding opportunities highlighted below.
