About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for basic research on the deleterious effects of acute exposure to ultra-potent synthetic opioids and related pathophysiological consequences, with applications due November 18, 2027. Clinical trials are not eligible under this R01 mechanism.

Eligible applicants include a broad range of organizations: higher education institutions (public and private), state and local governments, special district governments, Indian housing authorities, independent school districts, nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), tribal organizations and governments (federally and non-federally recognized), small businesses, for-profit organizations, and other entities. Additionally eligible are Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian serving institutions, HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, AANAPISIs, TCCUs, faith-based and community-based organizations, eligible federal agencies, regional organizations, and U.S. territories or possessions. Non-domestic entities and non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are not eligible.

The program supports research addressing acute exposure to ultra-potent synthetic opioids including fentanyl, carfentanil, and nitazenes, as well as their combinations such as fentanyl and xylazine. Research on persistent and delayed pathophysiological effects following acute exposure is also within scope.

The opportunity is assigned to five parent grant programs under the National Institutes of Health: Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279), Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research (CFDA 93.855), Cardiovascular Diseases Research (CFDA 93.837), Lung Diseases Research (CFDA 93.838), and National Center on Sleep Disorders Research (CFDA 93.233). Award ceiling, floor, expected number of awards, period of performance, place of performance, and specific evaluation criteria are not specified in the available materials. Applicants must follow standard NIH R01 application procedures using FORMS-I research instructions.

Synopsis

This notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) will support research towards understanding and mitigating the deleterious effects of acute exposure to Ultra-Potent Synthetic (UPS) opioids (e.g., fentanyl, carfentanil, nitazenes) and their combinations (fentanyl and xylazine). This NOFO will also support research on the persistent and/or delayed pathophysiological effects after acute exposure to such agents.

Eligibility

Other Eligible Applicants include the following: Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession; Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations) are not eligible to apply.Non-domestic (non-U.S.) components of U.S. Organizations are not eligible to apply.
