About this opportunity

The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs is seeking grant applications from 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations to carry out a project that will establish regional standards on judicial independence in Central Asia through the enforcement of merit-based systems for the selection of judges. The key objectives are to create a network of Central Asian Supreme Judicial Councils, develop regional standards for transparent judicial selection, and promote regional collaboration on ethics and independence of the judiciary. Eligible applicants must have relevant experience in judicial reform and regional coordination efforts. Applications are due by August 7, 2024, and the initial project implementation period is 24 months, starting in October 2024.

Up to $480,000 is available for a single award to fund this grant opportunity, which is part of the Department of State's Criminal Justice Systems program (CFDA 19.703). The project must engage all five Central Asian countries - Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan - and may include a combination of in-person activities within each program country and remote engagement options.
