About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health, through the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), is soliciting applications for basic research investigating pathological mechanisms of skin injuries caused by toxic chemicals identified as high-consequence public health threats, with rolling application deadlines of October 5 and November 5 annually through November 5, 2028. Clinical trials are not permitted.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits with and without 501(c)(3) status, for-profit organizations, state and local governments, tribal governments, and faith-based organizations; foreign organizations and foreign subawards are not eligible. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) also participates in this initiative.
Award budgets are limited to $300,000 per year in direct costs for a maximum project period of 5 years. Earliest award start date is March 2027, with subsequent cycles in May, July, and October. Applications must focus on acute single exposures to at least two different toxic chemicals of concern from different toxidromes and investigate molecular, cellular, and immunological pathology underlying skin injury. Responsive applications emphasize understanding commonalities in fundamental mechanisms across vesicants such as sulfur mustard, Lewisite, nitrogen mustard, phosgene oxime, and arsenicals, with the goal of identifying shared therapeutic targets and developing broad-spectrum medical countermeasures. Team science approaches are encouraged. Non-responsive applications include those addressing chronic exposures, non-skin effects, chemicals not designated as concerns of concern, or product development activities.
Scientific review uses standard NIH peer review criteria evaluating significance, innovation, rigor, feasibility, investigator expertise, and institutional resources. Funding is supported under CFDA 93.846 (Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Research), 93.855 (Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research), and 93.279 (Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs).
Synopsis
The purpose of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to solicit basic research applications to investigate the pathological mechanisms of skin injuries caused by toxic Chemicals of Concern (CoC) identified as public health threats by the United States Government. This NOFO supports the goal of the trans-NIH Chemical Countermeasures Research Program (CCRP) and is intended to spur the discovery and early development of broad-spectrum medical countermeasures (MCMs) to advance the nation's medical and public health preparedness for, response to, and recovery from high consequence chemical disasters and emergencies.
Eligibility
Refer to Section III. Eligibility Information in the NOFO for additional information on eligibility.Foreign Organizations/International Collaborations:Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations) are not eligible to apply.Non-domestic (non-U.S.) components of U.S. Organizations are not eligible to apply.Foreign components, as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement, are allowed.
