About this opportunity
The Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Lab is seeking applicants for the Blue-Sky Training Program for Grid Scale Energy Storage Systems under Funding Opportunity DE-FOA-0003497. This program aims to enhance community safety for utilities with Energy Storage Systems by developing emergency response plans, training programs, and safety validation reports. Eligible applicants include owners/operators of utility-scale energy storage systems (100kW or greater), host site entities with access to such systems, or entities with agreements granting appropriate access for site visits. Applications are due by February 2, 2025, and the evaluation will focus on the applicant's ability to engage relevant stakeholders, assess risks, and create comprehensive training materials.
The program will award approximately $4.125 million through 15 cooperative agreements of $275,000 each for a 12-month period of performance. The funded projects must conduct scenario-based training exercises and pilot the safety validation reports with at least two demonstration partners to ensure the developed materials are comprehensive and actionable.
Synopsis
Blue-Sky Training Program for Grid Scale Energy Storage Systems aims to enhance community safety for utilities with Energy Storage Systems. As storage technologies continue to be deployed, it is critical that communities are storage ready and that necessary stakeholders are brought to the table to ensure a new or existing Energy Storage Systems will operate safely and reliably. In localities across the country, uncertainty over proper response procedures to security threats and unanticipated failures of Energy Storage Systems can delay or even prevent deployment.
