About this opportunity

The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), under the Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs, is soliciting applications to fund comprehensive and collaborative reentry strategies designed to reduce recidivism and support successful community reintegration for adults transitioning from prison, jail, or supervision. Eligible applicants include state, local, and tribal governments, county governments, city/township governments, and special district governments. Applicants must establish or expand evidence-based interventions addressing reentry needs such as housing assistance, substance use disorder treatment, mental health services, employment and education support, case management, and wraparound social services, as outlined in the Second Chance Act (34 USC 10631). The evaluation process will include assessments of eligibility and responsiveness, merit, programmatic quality, budget reasonableness, and organizational risk. The application deadline is April 1, 2026, with the notice of funding opportunity posted on February 19, 2026.

Awards under this initiative typically range from $500,000 to $1,000,000 over three-year periods, though cooperative agreements may reach up to $4,000,000 over five-year periods. Performance periods generally span 36 to 48 months. Projects will be implemented across correctional facilities, detention centers, community-based service providers, and local jurisdictions throughout the United States. All awarded entities must comply with federal audit requirements, maintain comprehensive records for three years following final expenditure reporting, and accept or decline awards within 45 days of notification.

Synopsis

Interventions may address a variety of needs related to reentry as outlined in section 101, subsection (b) of the Second Chance Act (34 USC §10631- Adult and juvenile offender state and local reentry demonstration projects).
