About this opportunity

The Biotechnology Risk Assessment Research Grants Program is seeking applications for environmental assessment research concerning genetically engineered organisms. Administered by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, the program aims to support research that will assist regulatory agencies in evaluating the effects of introducing genetically engineered plants, microorganisms, arthropods, fish, birds, and mammals into the environment. Studies on both managed and natural environments are eligible, addressing issues like risk management practices, monitoring dispersal, gene transfer research, and comparative environmental impact assessments. Applications will be evaluated based on relevance to regulatory needs, technical merit, qualifications of the applicant, and budget appropriateness. The deadline for letters of intent is January 11, 2024, with full applications due February 29, 2024.

Funding will range from $50,000 to $650,000 per one to four year award. Research is expected to be performed at public and private research and education institutions. Anticipated total program funding is $5.5 million over the fiscal year.

Synopsis

The purpose of the Biotechnology Risk Assessment Research Grants Program (BRAG) program is to support the generation of new information that will assist Federal regulatory agencies in making science-based decisions about the effects of introducing into the environment genetically engineered organisms (GE), including plants, microorganisms - such as fungi, bacteria, and viruses - arthropods, fish, birds, mammals and other animals excluding humans. Investigations of effects on both managed and natural environments are relevant. The BRAG program accomplishes its purpose by providing federal regulatory agencies with scientific information relevant to regulatory issues.
