About this opportunity

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) is soliciting applications for the Avant Garde/Avenir Awards program supporting high-risk, high-reward research on HIV and substance use, with application due dates of September 25, 2026, 2027, and 2028. Clinical trial proposals are optional. The program supports exceptionally creative scientists, including early-stage investigators (ESIs), proposing cutting-edge, potentially transformative approaches to biomedical and behavioral research at the intersection of HIV and substance use or substance use disorders.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits (including 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), for-profit organizations, small businesses, state and local governments, county and city/township governments, tribal governments (federally recognized and not federally recognized), special district governments, public or Indian housing authorities, independent school districts, and foreign organizations. Foreign components of U.S. organizations and non-domestic entities are eligible; however, applications cannot involve foreign subawards or subcontracts.

Established investigators may receive up to $700,000 per year; ESIs may receive up to $375,000 per year. Established investigators must commit at least 35% effort (4.2 person months); ESIs must commit at least 25% effort (3 person months). The maximum project period is five years.

Funded research encompasses basic, clinical, translational, and implementation science approaches to HIV prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and virus suppression in people who use substances or have substance use disorders. Applications must clearly establish the nexus between substance use and HIV research and demonstrate why substance use is relevant to the proposed work. Applications focusing solely on alcohol, evaluating harm reduction models, or lacking preliminary data and innovation are non-responsive.

The program uses DP1 activity code and falls under CFDA 93.279 (Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs). Peer review emphasizes scientific significance, innovation, investigator qualifications, and approach robustness.

Synopsis
