About this opportunity

The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) intends to publish a Notice of Funding Opportunity to solicit applications for an ancient DNA for Modern Genomics (aDMG) Data Generation and Resource Center cooperative agreement; applications are not being solicited at this time, and no application deadline is set. The program will use the U24 activity code and will fund one or more cooperative agreements to establish an ethical resource of ancient and historical human DNA data to advance studies about contemporary human traits and biology.

Eligible applicants include county governments, for-profit organizations, 501(c)(3) nonprofits, tribal organizations (federally and non-federally recognized), tribal governments, state governments, public and private higher education institutions, independent school districts, public or Indian housing authorities, and small businesses.

The Data Generation and Resource Center will produce high-quality whole-genome sequence data from approved aDNA sources, harmonize with existing data, and create a centralized data portal. The NHGRI encourages collaborative applications combining expertise in DNA sequencing methods and technology, computational genomics and data science, human evolution, and ancient human populations.

This opportunity falls under Assistance Listing 93.172 (Human Genome Research). Per the NHGRI's standard review process, all applications will undergo scientific and technical merit peer review followed by consideration by a national advisory council before award. Award selection will be based on scientific and technical merit, program relevance, program balance across research areas, and availability of funds.

Investigators interested in this funding should begin developing meaningful collaborations immediately, as the NOFO publication date has not yet been announced.

Forecast synopsis

The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) intends to publish a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to solicit applications to establish an ancient DNA for Modern Genomics (aDMG) program. The goal of aDMG is to establish an ethical resource of ancient and historical human DNA (aDNA) data to advance studies about contemporary human traits and biology. The Data Generation and Resource Center would Produce high-quality, whole-genome sequence data from approved aDNA sources and harmonize with existing data to create a centralized data portal. Applications are not being solicited at this time. Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects. This NOFO will utilize the U24 activity code. Investigators with expertise and insights into this area of ancient DNA and population genomics are encouraged to begin to consider applying for this new NOFO. In addition, collaborative investigations combining expertise in DNA sequencing methods and technology, computational genomics and data science, human evolution, and ancient human populations will be encouraged and these investigators should also begin considering applying for this application.
