About this opportunity
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is seeking applications for the Small Health Services Research Grant Program (R03) to fund research addressing AHRQ's core priorities: improving healthcare quality and patient safety, enhancing healthcare delivery and practice improvement, and advancing whole-person healthcare delivery. This program supports research across all healthcare settings, including hospitals, long-term care facilities, ambulatory care, home healthcare, and pharmacy services, and welcomes research involving diverse partners such as patients, clinicians, policymakers, healthcare organizations, and government entities. Applicants must demonstrate scientific and technical merit, with particular emphasis on relevance to identified AHRQ program priority issues. Applications will be evaluated by peer review committees composed of nonfederal consultants, with final funding decisions made by AHRQ based on scientific merit, program relevance, and funding availability. The application deadline is March 25, 2026.
Award values under the parent Research on Healthcare Costs, Quality and Outcomes program (CFDA 93.226) typically range from approximately $44,000 to $4,000,000, with average awards between $300,000 and $1,200,000, and project periods spanning up to 5 years. Research may be conducted across varied healthcare delivery settings nationwide, including urban, suburban, and rural locations. Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofit organizations, for-profit entities, state and local governments, tribal governments, small businesses, and other public or private organizations, with funds released on an annual basis according to the grantee institution's established payment procedures with the Department of Health and Human Services.
