About this opportunity
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), within the Department of Health and Human Services, is soliciting applications for the Mentored Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Award (K08) to develop a diverse pool of highly trained health services researchers capable of addressing AHRQ's mission and research priorities. This career development grant is designed for individual researchers and is administered under the Research on Healthcare Costs, Quality and Outcomes program (CFDA 93.226). Eligible applicants include federal, state, and local government agencies; federally-recognized Indian tribal governments; public and private institutions of higher education; and 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations. Applications will be evaluated based on scientific merit, technical feasibility, the qualifications of the principal investigator and staff, and appropriateness of methodology and budget through peer review by a committee including nonfederal consultants. The application deadline is March 25, 2026, with the grant opportunity having been posted on August 9, 2022.
Award values under the Research on Healthcare Costs, Quality and Outcomes program typically range from approximately $44,000 to $4,000,000, with average awards between $300,000 and $1,200,000 depending on project scope and complexity. Funding supports multi-year project periods of up to five years, with annual obligations and funds released in accordance with the grantee institution's established payment procedures with DHHS. Research activities may be conducted across diverse healthcare delivery settings nationwide, including hospitals, long-term care facilities, ambulatory care practices, and home healthcare environments. All approved proposals meeting scientific merit standards and aligned with AHRQ priority areas will be funded subject to available appropriations.
