About this opportunity

The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs is seeking grant applications from 501(c)(3) nonprofits for a project to address gaps in how law faculties in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) equip students with necessary legal skills, and to leverage cross-institutional collaboration and inter-generational exchange to positively shape legal culture and build public trust in justice institutions. The program aims to prepare law students to enter the legal profession with critical lawyering skills, as well as develop a trusted law profession advocacy network. Key objectives include strengthening law student learning, facilitating collaboration, and promoting professionalism, ethics, and resilience among young lawyers. The application deadline is January 6, 2025.

The total funding available is $600,000, with an anticipated single award between $500,000 and $600,000. The grant period is 24-36 months, with an anticipated start date of February 2025. The program is funded under the Criminal Justice Systems foreign assistance program (CFDA 19.703), which aims to strengthen partner country law enforcement and judicial effectiveness.

Synopsis

The Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs of the U.S. Department of State announces an open competition for organizations to submit applications to carry out a project to address: 1) the gap in how law faculties in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) equip students with necessary legal skillsets required for the legal profession; and 2) the necessity for credible legal practitioners to positively influence law students and young lawyers and impart on their professionalism, ethics, values, and resilience. There is a need to strengthen BiH law student learning of critical lawyering skills and to leverage cross-institutional collaboration and inter-generational exchange of legal knowledge and experience. Specifically, the Program will prepare law students to enter the legal profession with skills needed to work effectively in the justice system. More broadly, the Program will positively shape legal culture in BiH, serve as a longer-term strategy to combat corruption, build public trust in justice institutions, and confidence in the legal profession.
