About this opportunity

The U.S. Forest Service is seeking applicants for the 2025 Forest Service Eastern Region Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy grant opportunity. The purpose of this grant is to support the first two goals of the National Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy across the Midwestern and Northeastern States: restoring and maintaining resilient landscapes, and creating fire-adapted communities. Eligible applicants include state/local governments, tribes, nonprofits, and higher education institutions. Applications will be evaluated based on criteria such as alignment with the Northeast Regional Action Plan, partnerships, assistance to underserved communities, project effectiveness, and wildfire risk focus. The application deadline is January 15, 2025, with submissions required through Grants.gov.

The grant offers funding ranging from $25,000 to $300,000 per award, with a 100% match requirement. Equipment costs are limited to 25% of federal funds requested. The total funding amount and individual award values are not specified, but state funding caps at 15% of total awards, estimated to be around $420,000 per state. The place of performance includes private, tribal, state, and local government forest lands across the Midwestern and Northeastern U.S.

Synopsis

The U.S. Forest Service supports moving toward shared stewardship across Landscapes as part of a conceptual framework for making strategic investments across landscapes to co-manage wildfire risk and achieve positive outcomes at the most appropriate scale. Within this framework, Eastern Region Cohesive Fire Strategy Competitive Request for Applications is designed to support and carry out the first two goals of the National Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy (NCS) across the Midwestern and Northeastern States as well as meet the intent of the current year budget direction. These first two national goals are:

  1. Restore and Maintain Landscapes: Landscapes across all jurisdictions are resilient to fire-related disturbances in accordance with management objectives.
  2. Create Fire Adapted Communities: Human populations and infrastructure can withstand a wildfire without loss of life and property.
